     GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR CONTESTANTS

  1. IWCA rules apply to all IWCA divisions. IWCA rules may be obtained by contacting JoAnne Watson at (360) 736-1082, e-mail: jobyrn@comcast.net or log on to www.iwfca.com
  2. All entrants must complete and sign the entry form including IWCA number if entering an IWCA division. All mailed entries must have a tag securely attached which lists species, class to be entered, carver's name, home address, and phone number. Appropriate fees for return insurance must be included.
  3. Deadlines: Mailed entries must be received by Wednesday, February 7, 2008; hand-carried entries by 9:00am, February 9, 2008. Entries must remain on display until 4:00pm, Sunday February 10, at which time they can be checked out. Mailed entries will be returned as soon as possible after the show.
  4. Packing Your Carving: Year after year, we receive a few carvings that are damaged during shipping. Rarely is it a problem with seasoned carvers. They have figured out that their packing efforts are the best insurance against damage.

PSWA has always accepted mailed-in entries. The committee that unpacks and re-packs the carvings have seen it all after 34 years. It often seems obvious that a carving received with damage was not packed very well.

No matter which carrier you use, your package is bound to be tossed around a bit. One of the best forms of protection is the double box. Use only sturdy boxes. Ideally, the inside box would be 4" smaller in all three dimensions. This gives a 2" barrier and a shock absorbing zone that is a huge help while in transit. The 2" space can be filled with polyfoam, bubble wrap, newspaper, foam peanuts or Styrofoam. Least favorite is the foam peanuts, as it is hard to control them during packing and re-packing.

    Packing Your Inner Box

Our best advice would be to attach a note on the top of the inner box with information on how the carving is situated and how the person unpacking your carving should proceed. If the inner box has foam peanuts, please include a large plastic trash bag so they can be caught and returned to your box.

If you put multiple carvings in one box, allow for, at least, a 2" cushion between them. Squeezing one more carving into a full box puts your pieces at risk. If you do pack more than two carvings in one box, please include a configuration as to how they should be re-packed. Otherwise, the box of carvings looks like a jigsaw puzzle to whoever is repacking. This seems to happen every year.

Everyone has a different idea for packing materials. Bubble wrap, foam peanuts, paper, polyfoam, and shredded paper are most commonly used. Towels, diapers, fiberglass insulation, pillows, and custom cut layers of polyfoam also show up. Please consider how someone you do not know will re-pack for you.

Seal your box with a good quality boxing tape. We assume that an address label is on the top and we should open it there. If not, mark the outer box, "Open Here". Ideally, the inside box can remain in the outer box and simply be opened from the top. Again, a note on how to unpack your box would help.

Please include all registration info on top of inner box in an envelope clearly marked. A return shipping label is also helpful.

If your carving arrives damaged, we will try to contact you before the competition. Please include a phone number where you can be reached. We do not try to repair broken carvings. If the damage is minor, we may put it in the competition for you with a note to the judges, "Damaged in shipping". You may still win! Good Luck.
  5. Any visual identifying marks will be covered during competition. All entries shall be by entrant or with written permission of the carver. No detailed machine-made blanks will be allowed, except in Bench Class.
  6. You may enter the OPEN, INTERMEDIATE, or NOVICE class based on the IWCA levels competition.
  7. Except where otherwise noted, all entries must be carved of cork, wood, or stretched cloth. Cast metal components are acceptable in Novice level only.
  8. All components used to create the environment for decorative divisions are to be entirely hand formed.
  9. Entries may not have been entered in a previous California Open.
  10. Show Chairman shall have final authority related to all show issues.
